Open University

Open University makes it possible for you to take courses from the University's offerings on a space-available basis without going through the formal admission process. Open University applications are accepted at both the San Bernardio and Palm Desert campuses.

(Your browser may be set to display PDF files within the browser window instead of in an Acrobat window.) Please follow these instructions to configure your browser to use Acrobat or Adobe Reader to open PDF files.
  1. Quit your browser program.
  2. Start Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
  3. Choose Edit > Preferences.
  4. Select Internet in the list on the left.
  5. Deselect Display PDF in Browser, and click OK.
  6. Restart your browser

Open university is a program designed for those who:

  1. want to examine a particular field before seeking admission to the University and enrolling in a degree program;
  2. want to update professional skills;
  3. missed the deadline for admission to CSUSB;
  4. have stopped attending CSUSB and wish to reenter;
  5. want to improve their GPA in order to reenter an academic program;
  6. wish to take selected CSUSB courses that will transfer to another university; or
  7. want to take a course for the enjoyment of learning.

The Open University program can help you update professional skills, prepare for a career change, enrich your personal development or work toward a degree. Many of the regular courses are held in the late afternoon and evenings, which provides opportunities for working adults.


SPRING QUARTER 2012 IMPORTANT DATES

Monday 4/2/12—First day Open University applications will be available for Spring Quarter classes. No fees will be accepted at this time.

Monday 4/9/12 —First day payment will be accepted along with signed application; return to the College of Extended Learning (Sierra Hall 134) to register for courses.  You are not enrolled until this office has received a signed application and applicable fees have been paid.  Fees may be paid by cash, check, money order, or by Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

Friday 4/13/12 —Final day to pay fees without incurring a late fee of $25 per class.  After this date, registration forms will require both the Instructor and the Chairman of the Department’s signature.

Friday 4/20/12—Census—Final day to register and pay fees. Students will have to use the Petition process to register after this date.

WITHDRAWALS and REFUNDS

Friday 4/20/12—Last day for students to withdraw from classes without record and receive a 65% refund (at no time are 100% refunds issued).  

Monday 4/23/12—Refunds for dropped classes are no longer issued.  Withdrawals after this date will be permissible only for serious and compelling reasons, such as a serious illness or accident, and students will receive a “Withdrawal” on their records.  Documentation is required for these exceptions.

To withdraw from a course, students must complete a College of Extended Learning Withdrawal Form and return it to SH 134.  Failure to withdraw from a course before the deadline will result in a failing grade.  University Add/Drop slips are not accepted.  Withdrawals are not accepted by phone.  Students are not automatically dropped for non-attendance, although instructors have the option to drop students who have not appeared in class. Students who have been dropped by the instructor for non-attendance are still bound to the same deadlines for refunds.

Additional fees may be charged for courses that offer laboratory work or individual tutorial instruction.

*Important Student Fee Information: The College of Extended Learning makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased to meet the operating costs of delivering continuing education courses and programs. Therefore, the College of Extended Learning reserves the right to increase or modify fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular quarter has begun. All College of Extended Learning fees are subject to change.
