Medical coding and billing is the process of translating medical records into standardized numeric codes used to bill patients and third-party payers, such as insurance companies and Medicare. Medical coding and billing professionals play an important part in the healthcare system since all medical treatments, tests, and procedures must be coded, and professionals in this field have a promising career outlook.

The 2008-2009 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the U.S. Department of Labor estimates:

• 30,000 new coding-related jobs between 2006 and 2016

• 18% increase to the medical records and health information field (including medical coding)

• Higher rate of growth than the average for other occupations

The Department further states, “Technicians with a strong background in medical coding will be in particularly high demand.” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2008-2009 ed.).

• Outpatient Medical Coding and Billing

  This online program provides the high-quality training to become a medical coder and billing specialist. Learn at home with a competency-based approach that equips you for this in-demand occupation. After completing the certificate program, you will be prepared for a new job, earning a great salary and enjoying flexible hours. Medical coders and billing specialists can work in insurance companies, doctors’ offices and clinics, and home health agencies.

• NEW! Dual-Career Path Premium Package--
  Inpatient/Outpatient Medical Coding and Billing

  Includes the complete Outpatient Medical Coding and Billing PLUS additional training in inpatient medical coding and billing. Inpatient coders work with the records of patients who are admitted to the hospital. The Inpatient and Outpatient Medical Coding and Billing certificate program is designed to help you gain the knowledge and skills for both inpatient and outpatient medical coding and billing, making you more flexible and marketable after graduation!
